Mexican Brownies are a flavor explosion of rich, chewy chocolate that is deliciously intense thanks to the addition of cayenne and cinnamon! Keep things simple by using a box of brownie mix, a few kitchen staples like eggs and oil, and the perfect amount of cayenne and cinnamon to perk up your tastebuds for this amazing treat!
Brownies with a Kick
Brownies with a little heat were not something I thought my family and I would fall head over heels in love with and I am so glad I was wrong! Pairing chocolate with cayenne and cinnamon gives the chocolate a more intense and richer taste, which is perfect if you’re a chocoholic like me. The heat is subtle, so while brownies and milk are always a fantastic combination, it’s not needed to quench the heat, and you’ll love the depth of flavor of these brownies, with their sweet cinnamon twist!

Ingredients
Brownie Mix: Purchase an 18.3-ounce box of fudge brownie mix. This is more than a regular-sized box, so check the amount on the box or look for a box that says “family size.”
Pantry Ingredients: You will need vegetable oil and mini chocolate chips. Choose the chocolate chips you like the most, or stick with semi-sweet chips.
Refrigerated Ingredients: To make these brownies, you will also need eggs and whole milk. If you don’t have whole milk, you can use what you have on hand, but 2% or whole milk works best.
Spices: Bring a ton of flavor to this recipe with ground cayenne and cinnamon.
Garnish: This is optional, but you can sprinkle a dusting of powdered sugar, cinnamon, and/or cocoa powder over the top of the brownies before serving.
How to Make Mexican Brownies
STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a 9-inch x 13-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Set that aside. Mix the brownie mix, milk, eggs, oil, chocolate chips, ground cayenne, and cinnamon in a large bowl until evenly mixed.
STEP TWO: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it into an even layer. Then bake for 25-30 minutes.
STEP THREE: Once out of the oven, allow the brownies to cool before cutting into 15 squares.
STEP FOUR: If you’d like, dust the tops of the brownies with cocoa powder or powdered sugar mixed with cinnamon before serving.
Tips for Success
- Be sure to purchase a brownie mix that is 18.3 ounces or family-sized. You will only be using the mix and do not need to purchase the additional ingredients listed on the back of the box, although they will likely be similar.
- The cayenne powder brings an incredible depth of flavor to these brownies, but if you are worried about the heat, use a little less—chances are you’ll use the full amount next time you make these!
- Line your baking dish with enough parchment paper to hang over the sides a little. This will make lifting brownies out of the pan a total cinch!
Where did Mexican Brownies come from?
Mexican brownies were believed to have been created by chef Maria Gonzales in Mexico City, Mexico. Although the original brownie recipe was first published in the late 1800s and became popular in the 1920s, it wasn’t until around 2000 that Mexican Brownies became much more popular. The combination of sweet and spicy gives people’s taste buds something to celebrate and just like Mexican Brownies, other treats like Mexican Hot Chocolate have also become cultural favorites!
Can I make these brownies homemade?
Brownies can be a serious business and no one wants to end up with a dish of brownies they don’t love! If you have a favorite recipe for cakey, fudgy, or chewy brownies, you can certainly use that in place for this recipe. Do you like the idea of a homemade brownie but don’t have a go-to recipe? Check out this recipe for Brownies from Scratch; it’s amazing! The trick with turning them into Mexican Brownies is to add the same amount of cayenne and cinnamon to your recipe. If you are making an 8×8 pan of brownies, use half of the spice amounts listed.
