Ingredients
Oreos: You will need a package of crushed regular Oreos to make these eyeballs. Feel free to use gluten-free Oreos, but avoid the Double Stuf Oreos, as they will not work in this recipe.
Cream Cheese: To make these Oreo balls, use regular, low-fat, or Neufchatel cream cheese. Set the cream cheese out ahead of time to soften, making mixing easier.
Candy Melts: You will need white candy melts to coat the eyeballs and red candy melts to decorate them. If you have white almond bark on hand, you can also use it to coat the Oreo balls.
Candy: Lifesaver’s gummies are needed to decorate the eyeballs.
Chocolate Chips: You can purchase a bag of chocolate chips for this recipe or use what you have on hand. Any regular-sized variety will work.
How to Make Eyeball Oreo Balls
STEP ONE: Combine the Oreo crumbs and the cream cheese until everything is well-mixed. Shape the mixture into 1-inch-sized balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Freeze the Oreo balls for 20 minutes.
STEP TWO: Melt the white candy melts in a mug or bowl deep enough to cover the cookie balls fully. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper. Working in batches, remove a few Oreo balls from the freezer at a time and one at a time, place a ball on a fork, and dip the ball into the candy melt to coat evenly. Gently shake off the excess candy melt and place the candy-coated Oreo balls on the lined baking sheet to set.
STEP THREE: Before moving on to the next batch, place one Lifesaver gummy on each cookie ball and set one chocolate chip in the Lifesaver hole.
STEP FOUR: Melt the red candy melts in a cup and then pour the melted candy into a sandwich bag. Snip off a small portion of the corner of the bag and pipe small red lines over the eyeballs. Once the eyeballs are set, you can enjoy this spooky treat!
Tips for Success
- You can easily turn Oreos into crumbs by pulsing them a few times in a food processor or sealing them in a ziplock bag and crushing them with a rolling pin. Just remember to use regular Oreos, not Double Stuf.
- If your candy melt has become too thick, try thinning it with a little oil so that it coats evenly and doesn’t leave clumps. Avoid adding water, as that will cause the candy melt to seize, and you will need to melt a new batch.
- Freeze the Oreo balls for 20 minutes before coating them so they are nice and firm. Working in batches will also keep the cookie balls firm and easier to dip, without falling apart.
Do you freeze or refrigerate Oreo balls?
After decorating all of the Oreo balls, place the cookie sheet in the fridge to allow the balls to be completely set. You will want to refrigerate the Oreo balls for at least an hour before serving. You can also store the Oreo balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks. It’s best to keep the Oreo balls in the freezer when storing for a longer time. Oreo balls can be kept in the freezer for up to four months. Whether in the fridge or freezer, a simple way to keep them in good shape is to stack the Oreo balls with layers of parchment paper between them.
Why are my Oreo balls cracking?
First, use regular Oreos to prevent your Oreo balls from cracking and falling apart. Double Stuf Oreos combined with cream cheese make for a too-wet filling, so it won’t hold together either. Secondly, remember to freeze the Oreo balls before coating them with chocolate. Dipping the cookie balls into the candy coating when frozen is much easier! Lastly, make sure your candy melt isn’t too hot. If the candy melt seems hot, let it cool for a few minutes before coating the Oreo balls.

Equipment
- Waxed Paper or Parchment Paper
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened
- 3 cups Oreo cookies finely crushed (1 package)
- 16 ounces white candy melts
- 8 ounces red candy melts
- 40 red Lifesavers Gummies (I bought 2 bags to have enough)
- 40 chocolate chips
Instructions
- Add the Oreo cookie crumbs and cream cheese to a large mixing bowl. Beat together until completely combined.
- Use a cookie scoop (or measuring spoon) to portion the Oreo mixture. Then roll the scoops into 1-inch balls and place them on a wax paper-lined baking sheet. Freeze for at least 20 minutes.
- Melt the white candy melts according to the package directions in a heat-proof bowl.
- Take 5 of the Oreo balls from the freezer. Dip one in the melted white candy melts with a fork. Lift it and let the excess candy run back into the bowl. Place the dipped ball on another waxed paper-line backing sheet. Add 1 Lifesaver Gummie to each ball and press 1 chocolate chip into the center of the gummie flat side facing out.
- Repeat with the remaining Oreo balls. It's important to work in small batches! You need to add the gummie and chocolate chip while the candy melts are still soft so they stick to the Oreo balls. If the candy melts start to firm up/get too thick, heat them in the microwave again in 30-second intervals to re-melt.
- Melt the white candy melts according to the package directions in a heat-proof bowl. Pour the red candy into a piping bag or plastic sandwich bag. (You'll need to let the candy cool slightly first so it's not too hot to touch.)
- Cut the tip of the piping bag off (or a small corner of the sandwich bag) and pipe red lines on the balls. I like to make them squiggly, with tendrils coming off to the sides. You don't want the lines to be perfect.
- Serve on a platter or store in an airtight container in the fridge until you're ready to serve.
