Other Recipes like Nutella Overnight Oats
- Peanut Butter & Jelly Overnight Oats are another kid-friendly option for refrigerated oats to make your life easier!
- Vanilla Almond Overnight Oats are a more sophisticated grown-up version of the “Grab & Go” breakfast jar.
Ingredients
Nut Butter: Nutella is a creamy hazelnut spread that makes these overnight oats a kid’s favorite! Off-brand chocolate hazelnut spreads are available, and they’ll work just fine… or you could substitute almond butter, peanut butter, etc.
Oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats are the only good oatmeal option for overnight oats. Steel-cut and instant don’t work very well.
Milk: You’ll need one cup of milk for every two breakfast jars. The type of milk is up to you! This overnight oats recipe uses whole milk, but 2% milk, skim, almond, oat, soy, etc., all work. The “milk” options are almost endless now!
Crunchy Topping: You’ll need your granola for some texture. Gluten-free granola will make the entire recipe gluten-friendly too.
How to Make Nutella Overnight Oats
STEP ONE: Add 1/2 cup and one tablespoon of Nutella to one of the pint-size mason jars. Stir that together until combined. Then add 1/2 cup of rolled oats and stir. Repeat these steps with the other jar.
STEP TWO: Place the lids onto the mason jars and store them in the fridge overnight (for at least 8 hours) until the oats have thickened.
STEP THREE: Remove a jar from the fridge and remove the lid. Top the oats with one tablespoon of Nutella and 1/4 cup of granola before serving.
Tips for Success
- Nutella Overnight Oats are thick and creamy – perfect for car travel! But if you prefer them a bit thinner, increase the amount of milk used.
- Add a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder to the milk and Nutella if you want to add some protein to your breakfast.
- If “sweet” is not your jam first thing in the morning, add a little sea salt to balance the sugar in the Nutella. SO good!
- Overnight oats are designed to be eaten cold, but it’s not required! Warm them up by microwaving them in 30-second intervals and gently stirring after heating until they’re just how you like ’em.
How Long Will Overnight Oats Last in the Refrigerator?
The beauty of overnight oats (besides how easy they are to make!) is their long-lasting power! Nutella overnight oats are good in the fridge for up to 5 days – that means Sunday night prep will take you through the entire work/school week! HOWEVER, the consistency does lose a little something after a few days, so I usually do 2 or 3 days at a time to keep the consistency thick and creamy.
What Kind of Oatmeal Works Best for Overnight Oats?
The only correct answer for overnight oats is old-fashioned rolled oats. The reason is simple: texture, texture, texture. Old-fashioned oats give that perfect creamy consistency. Steel-cut oats don’t work because they get gritty and chewy. Instant oatmeal packets also don’t work, but for the opposite reason – they get soggy. Old-fashioned oats are perfect every time!
