What is Pumpkin Spice?
In the last several years, you’ve probably seen Pumpkin Spice everything cropping up all over the place! From lattes to milkshakes, to pumpkin spice versions of your favorite foods at the grocery store, pumpkin spice is EVERYWHERE. But you may be wondering, just what exactly is pumpkin spice anyway? Does it have pumpkin in it?
Pumpkin spice doesn’t actually contain pumpkin. It’s really just another name for pumpkin pie spice – a mixture of 5 aromatic spices commonly used to flavor pumpkin pie and other pumpkin-flavored foods. Here’s what’s included in pumpkin pie spice:
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Ginger
- Cloves
- Allspice
You can make your own pumpkin pie spice at home, or you can find it conveniently pre-mixed in the spices section of your local grocer.
Ingredients in Pumpkin Spice Cocktail
- Milk
- Pumpkin puree
- Sugar
- Pumpkin pie spice
- Whipped vodka
- Vanilla
- Whipped cream
While this pumpkin cocktail was indeed created for the twenty-one-and-over crowd, you can certainly turn it into a mocktail or make it family-friendly by leaving out the vodka.
How to Make a Pumpkin Pie Cocktail
- Grab a medium-sized saucepan and place it over medium heat on your stove. Add the milk, pumpkin puree, sugar, and pumpkin pie spice and whisk everything together. Heat until the mixture is warm.
- Set out four coffee mugs and pour an ounce of whipped vodka into each one. Remove the saucepan of warm pumpkin mixture from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
- Pour the warm pumpkin drink into the vodka filled mugs, then top with whipped cream and serve!
How to Serve a Pumpkin Pie Cocktail
This warm pumpkin spice cocktail is best served in a fun mug with a generous dollop of whipped cream on top!
If you want to dress it up a little, consider drizzling caramel syrup over top and dusting it with a light coat of cinnamon and nutmeg. You can even add a cinnamon stick for a little extra flair!
Serve this warm pumpkin cocktail at your next fall gathering and you’ll surely wow every adult in the room!
Where can I find whipped vodka?
You can find whipped vodka at just about any liquor store or in the spirits section of your local grocer.
Pinnacle, Smirnoff, and Burnett’s brands all have their own versions of whipped cream vodka. Any one of these vodkas would be fantastic in this hot pumpkin pie cocktail!

What is whipped vodka and where can it be purchased? This recipe sounds amazing, but I want to make it the way it’s written, at least the first time!
Aubrey says
Thanks Suzi! Whipped vodka is just vodka that is flavored like whipped cream. It can be found in a liquor store. 🙂

Not available even in some big cities. It’s not available in Toronto, a city of 5 million. Our liquor stores are owned by the government and the inventory can be searched online. No whipped vodka or cream vodka. So sad. I guess I could substitute plain vodka or something like Baileys, but it would not be the same.
