Ingredients
Steak: You’ll need a good, marbled steak for the best Philly cheesesteak. Ribeye is the best, but top sirloin or top-round steak works great!
Veggies: It IS a cheesesteak, so onion and green pepper are called for here, along with a couple of garlic cloves to intensify the flavors.
Dairy: For this dip, we pulled out all the stops, using cream cheese, Monterey Jack, provolone, mozzarella, butter, and sour cream.
Garnish: A sprinkle of parsley over the finished dip makes for a beautiful presentation.
How to Make Philly Cheese Steak Dip
STEP ONE: Melt the butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Then, add the sliced onion and bell pepper. Cook until softened, about 4-5 minutes, stirring often.
STEP TWO: Add in the sliced steak and minced garlic and cook for another minute.
STEP THREE: Add the softened cream cheese and sour cream and stir slowly until smooth and completely melted. Add the Monterey Jack, provolone, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Stir until the cheese has melted.
STEP FOUR: Top with the dip with the remaining mozzarella cheese and place the skillet into the oven to broil for 2 minutes until the cheese is golden and the dip is bubbly.
STEP FIVE: Remove the dip from the oven, sprinkle with chopped parsley, and serve with baguette slices. SO DELICIOUS!
Tips for Success
- Freeze the beef for about 45 minutes before slicing. This makes it much easier to slice super thin.
- If big chunks of onions and peppers don’t appeal to you, no problem – simply dice them into smaller pieces.
- Yellow onions have a slight sweetness and give that balanced flavor that compliments the other cheesesteak ingredients.
- Ribeye is the preferred, flavorful steak cut for a Philly Cheesesteak, but top sirloin or top round steak are great alternatives.
- This dip will freeze – sealed airtight – for up to 2 months!
What’s the Secret to the Best Philly Cheese Steak?
The secret to the best Philly Cheesesteak all depends on who you ask! Some will say you MUST serve a cheesesteak on a toasted hoagie. Others say the addition of Cheese Whiz makes it just right. Others will still insist on caramelized onions. Still, when push comes to shove, I think the key to any steak sandwich is thinly sliced, high-quality beef with the gristly parts cut out. This makes every bite tender and delicious!
What Goes on a Traditional Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich?
The simple answer is: Thin-sliced steak, grilled onions, bell peppers, and cheese on a hoagie roll.
The more complicated answer is: Any kind of sliced steak, raw, grilled, or fried onions, bell peppers, sweet peppers, or jalapenos, grilled mushrooms, oregano, mayo, ketchup, hot sauce, or pizza sauce, Cheese Whiz, American, or Provolone cheese, all served on a hoagie, baguette, or even a hot dog bun!
Cheesesteak purists will keep it simple and insist you never use lettuce, tomato, or pickle. But Philly’s favorite sandwich is as versatile as those who eat it!
