Technically these aren’t “baked” potatoes since they are not indeed baked, but they taste just like it so just go with it. After you try what I consider the BEST baked potato recipe, you might never actually bake another baked potato; you’ll slow cook it!
How to Bake Potatoes in a Crock Pot
- You’ll start by giving your potatoes a good washing and scrubbing; this is especially important if you plan to eat the skin of the potato.
- Give each potato a few substantial pokes with a fork. Poking allows the steam from the potato to escape so that you don’t have a potato grenade type incident on your hands.
- Next, drizzle the outside of the raw potatoes in a little olive oil and rub them, so you get a thin layer of oil over the entire surface. Then sprinkle the potatoes with salt and again give them a rub to distribute the salt.
- After prepping the potatoes, wrap each one up in a square sheet of aluminum foil and then place them in the bottom of your slow cooker. Cook on high for 4-5 hours or low 7-8.
- To check for doneness, poke a fork all the way into the center of a potato. No need to remove the foil, poke right through it. If you can easily press the fork in them, they are done. If you feel resistance, then keep on cooking.
How many potatoes can I cook at a time?
You can cook as many as you can fit or as little as you need. I usually cook anywhere from 4-6 potatoes in my 6-quart Crock-Pot.
What size potatoes should I use?
Any size! The potatoes I get typically range from 10-14 ounces. If you are using smaller potatoes, check for doneness at the early end of the time frame.
Toppings for Baked Potatoes:
You can dress a baked potato with so many different toppings which makes it perfect for serving to a group of people who have varying tastes. You can serve it plain and simple with just butter and salt & pepper; fully loaded with cheese, bacon, sour cream, and green onions or chives; broccoli and cheese sauce; or top it with Instant Pot Chili. I have a Ninja crockpot with a metal insert. I think that won’t be a problem, but what about a small amount of liquid in the bottom of the pot? It seems weird to have no
Moisture. Thoughts?
Real Housemoms JK says
Hey Kim! I don’t use liquid in my crockpot for this recipe and it works great for my family.
Carmalynn Russell says
You said to put the potatoes in the bottom of the crockpot….is there a top to a crockpot? Do you mean to take out the insert and cook them on the metal? Just a little confused.
Real Housemoms JK says
Hey Carmalynn! You sould place the potatoes inside the ceramic crockpot. Do not take that out. You never want to cook directly on the metal part.

I understand poking holes in the potato, but doesn’t then wrapping it in aluminum foil defeat the purpose?
