Bring new life to last year’s summer bag easily using these 3 ways to update your summer tote!
I’ll be honest, stopping at three was so hard because there are so many creative and DIY-able details out there that will give your $20 straw bag an elevated look. But the following three are the easiest (because we are doing summer, right?) and are the best of the best of the more popular looks. I am so excited to tell ya about it, let’s get started!!

(1) POM POMS
Pom Poms are such an easy (technically they all are) DIY to jump on board with! You will need a ribbon with pom poms attached which is a lot of fun and it is available in a variety of colors at most craft and sewing stores.
Deciding how to attach your trim can be the hardest part – by glue or hand sewing. I personally wouldn’t mind popping in a movie and hand sew the 2-3 yards worth of ribbon in place. Hand sewing is intimidating for some, but I promise that once you get the hang of it (usually midway through your project), it goes by sooooooo fast. If you use glue, you could run the risk of it separating if friction is present and etc, but with a heavy duty glue like e6000, you should be GREAT! The original bag above is found here and is available for $115 – you could spend $10 in trim and use the left over money for date night.
(2) EMBROIDERY
Pick a phrase, any phrase and get to work! “Fun in the Sun”, “Beach Babe”, or “Riva’s Biggest Fan”… these are ALL very appropriate and most popular quotes this summer for your tote. Ha! kidding, not everyone lives by a beach! (These are the jokes friends.) Back to our project, there are a number of products to embroider with: serged serger thread, embroidery floss, sequined trim, yarn or even paint if you are feeling brave! Original tote bag price is found here and is available for $195. The art supplies can be done for pennies compared to this price tag! And last but not least…
(3) TASSELS
Tassels are a fan favorite and I’m so happy to still see it again this upcoming season! Now, you can definitely go and buy the ones already made OR you can do it yourself with this easy tutorial found on Pinterest! I still love to make them myself because then I can be super picky about the shades selected using embroidery floss! The original bag tote is found here and is available for $110 – save more and DIY.
So here’s the thing friends… at the end of the day, you can do whatever you want with your summer tote, there are a TON of ideas out there with scarves, handle wrapping with color thread or patches, but hopefully, this gets the ball rolling! Thanks so much for stopping by and have a glamorous day!
