When it comes to campfire treats, smores are a natural choice. But I also love making popcorn by putting the kernels between two sheets of aluminum foil, rolling in the sides, and listening to them pop. This method results in a taste that’s fresher than microwave popcorn, and it seems to pick up a hint of smokiness from the fire.
With this flame-popped flavor in mind, I came up with the perfect snack to savor and share while enjoying the simple things in life. Sweet and Smoky Popcorn combines the taste of buttered popcorn with a kick of spice and a touch of sweetness. Just a warning, though… it’s totally addicting!
Luckily, this recipe is super easy to whip up with pantry staples you probably already have in your kitchen. To make the sweet and smoky coating, simply melt butter, add some brown sugar and paprika, and a pinch of chili flakes. Mix the infused butter with some plain popcorn, and then start munching! You can pop the kernels in the microwave, on the stovetop, or over the fire – I prefer the latter! If you’re really lazy (me) you can buy pre-popped popcorn at the store and use that!
I love preparing a huge batch of Sweet and Smoky popcorn because it has a light and airy texture with an exciting, bold flavor. It won’t sit as heavy as five smores (even though you’re probably going to eat that many anyway), and it’s fun and easy to share while swapping stories with your loved ones until late into the night.
And on those days when you can’t squeeze an evening by the fire pit into your plans, the smokiness of this snack will remind you of those memorable summer evenings that are so fleeting in New England. Serve this delicious snack up with these Strawberry Peach Wine Slushies!
