As summer approaches I can’t help but think that pretty soon everything will be red, white, and blue! Kicking off the patriotic holidays this month is Memorial Day, and as proud Americans we love our flag decor! My son and I took a traditional fun kid’s patriotic craft and gave it our own spin. We made a Popsicle Stick Flag together–he painted, I glued, and even distressed it a bit for a classic look. Super fun project to work on with the kids and then use as summer decor!
Popsicle Stick Flag
Materials:
Pre painted 3/4″ Popsicle sticks package in assorted colors (6 red, 3 yellow)
Blue craft paint
White craft paint
Foam applicator
Small artist’s paintbrush
Hot glue gun (and glue stick)
Light sand paper (about 150 grit) Optional
 Directions:
Line the red sticks up together neatly. Lay a yellow stick diagonally across and secure with hot glue. Glue another stick straight along the side.
Turn the flag over and paint a blue square on the top left corner. You may need to help your kiddo with this part, but most will do just fine. Because the sticks were red, we gave ours a good 3 coats of blue to cover well. Allow to dry.
Trace the ‘lines’ where the sticks meet in white. Don’t worry if your child doesn’t make a perfectly straight line.
Paint white dots on the blue square to represent the stars. My son and I counted out to 50, one for each state in the union!
Lastly, and this part is totally optional, you can go over the whole thing (once dry of course) with sand paper. It gives it a smooth and aged look, perfect to use a a patriotic decoration at your Memorial Day BBQ!
A fun twist to traditional summer kid’s craft, made easily and fast! It’s perfect for those kids itching to get out into the hot sun and play!
