During the holidays we like to eat my mom’s apple pie, but this year we had so many family members together that we didn’t feel like making it the day before and instead decided to hang out with everyone. We still wanted the flavors though so I looked for a recipe for a quick apple dessert. I was originally looking for a standard cobbler with a crumble topping as a replacement for our apple pie, but this worked better.
It came together VERY fast and it bakes fast. It goes great with vanilla ice cream and everyone will love it. This dessert gave us the chance to eat a super yummy dessert and spend more time with the family. It was a big hit with everyone too.

Tools used in this French Apple Cobbler recipe
Pie Plate: A good pie plate is a kitchen essential for any home baker. I really like this plate! It’s a little deeper than your standard pie plate and has a lip that makes decorative edges easy.
Mixing Bowl: These mixing bowls get used just about every day at my house. The grip handle makes them easy to hold and the pour spout makes them perfect for batters!
Rubber Spatula: Rubber spatulas are one of those kitchen tools you don’t realize how much you use until they’re all dirty. This set of three spatulas in various sizes and shapes will make cooking everything from dinner to dessert a breeze.
Ice Cream Scoop: We eat a lot of ice cream and my house and I’ve gone through countless ice cream scoops of the years. This scoop is hands down my favoirte. It cuts into the ice cream easily and the ice cream comes right out.

I don’t have a deep dish pie plate. Would an 8x8x2 Pyrex pan work? Thank you!

I have never made apple cobbler before, so I had tried out another apple cobbler recipe I’d found on Pinterest so I could make some for Thanksgiving, it was NOT GOOD… at all. Then… I found yours and decided to give it a try, and OH MY GOODNESS… IT WAS PERFECT!!! It was so delicious and the topping was absolutely delicious and everyone loved it!! I will DEFINITELY be making this again, it was easy, and I had all the ingredients on hand!! MAKE THIS COBBLER!!!

Thank you so much!! I’m so glad it worked out so nicely for you.
Veronica says
Do you add vanilla to the apple filling & to the crust?
Aubrey Cota says
Into the filling.
Becky says
This recipe worked well with gluten free flour (all purpose cup-for-cup blend with xanthan gum). I used apples from my trees which are more like a fuji or gala and will reduce the sugar in the fruit filling in the future if I’m not using granny smiths. It was a little overly sweet with the sweeter apples. Thanks for the easy recipe
Aubrey Cota says
Thank you Becky.
Kamicka says
What makes the topping “vanilla”? Is there suppose to be vanilla in the topping recipe?
Aubrey Cota says
I think we just got really excited about the recipe and added an extra “vanilla” in the heading. It has been corrected, thanks for asking and bringing it to our attention!
Dot says
What kind of apples do you recommend?
Julie @Real Housemoms says
Granny smith apples, they hold up well when baking.
connie says
I’m going to make your yummy looking recipe because we love
apple pie, but this looks so much easier. Where did you get the
cute dessert spoon with the quote on it – gotta have that too.
Thanks so much.

Luckily these types of spoons are everywhere, Etsy is a great place to look! Thank you.
Christine says
Where do I find your abbreviation listing eg: is little t – teaspoon, capital T – tablespoon?
Julie @Real Housemoms says
Hi Christine. t = teaspoon and T = tablespoon. I’m sorry for any confusion the abbreviations may have caused.
Natalie says
Is the butter supposed to be chopped or melted???
Julie @Real Housemoms says
I’d cut the butter into small pieces and then use a fork to blend it into the dry ingredients…like you would for a pie crust or biscuits.
Brandy says
Excellent!! Thank you for sharing this recipe, it’s the perfect cobbler. I also added brown sugar sprinkled on top, and a few dashes of pumpkin pie spice into the mix!
jill says
I just made this and it was delicious! Thank you for sharing such a quick and easy cobbler.

Hello! Is it 350 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Julie K says
We’re in a US and all our recipes are in fahrenheit. We’ve updated the recipe to reflect this if you’re looking to print it out. 🙂
Karen says
I noticed that in the upper comments you state “the vanilla baked topping”, is there supposed to be vanilla in the topping mix?
Samantha says
Made this yesterday and it turned out great. I’m not even normally a big apple fan and I thought it was delicious. Received many compliments on it and will definitely make again. A great fall recipe. Thanks so much!
Karen says
Hello, I wanted to ask how many apples would you use? I’m not sure what 3 lbs. converts to. Thanks!
Aubrey says
Because the size and weight of apples varies so much weight is the best option. If you are needing a version to the metric system I’d google for the conversion.
Karen says
I’m sorry to have asked you this question, so I made two. But I’m wise enough to know how to use Google and no, I don’t need metric cinversion.
Karen says

As a general rule, 1 pound of apples is equal to: 4 small apples. 3 medium apples. 2 large apples.
I found this online. I was wondering the same thing 🙂

i was wondering also… thanks for the share…

I sprinkle brown sugar on top before putting in the oven. I’ve made this 3 times, and prefer it over pie! So good!
Aubrey says
Ooooo. I bet that’s good Carol. I’ll have to try next time. 🙂
