I think this is actually an easier recipe than making apple crisp or apple pie because you don’t have to peel and slice the apples, just remove the middle and fill it.
If you want to kick it up a notch and make your baked apple recipe really amazing you can top them as I do with vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup, or just add some fresh whipped cream on top. This is the ultimate fall indulgence for my family! We could eat this dessert every night during the colder seasons… but I won’t because swimsuit season is a thing.
Ingredients
Apples: I use Granny Smith apples to give a tart bite to mix with the sweet filling. You want to have a firm apple so it’ll keep its bowl type of structure once hollowed out. This is needed to hold the filling.
Filling: I love the combination of brown sugar and cinnamon with rolled oats to fill these apples. Make sure to get old-fashioned rolled oats for your baked apples. Instant/minute oats will not produce the correct texture and are not mushy/sticky.
How to Do You Bake an Apple in an Air Fryer
- Make the filling by mixing together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon together in a bowl. Then add the cold butter and use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to incorporate the butter until you have pea-sized crumbles.
- Next, core and hollow out the apples. Be sure to leave a 1/2-inch section at the bottom of the apple. Don’t cut all the way through so the filling stays in.
- Once the apples are ready, spoon the oat filling into the apples and place them in the air fryer basket. Then bake for 20 minutes in an air fryer set to 350 degrees F.
I can’t begin to describe the amazing aroma that fills your kitchen while you make this baked apple recipe. All the sweet and tart smells of the fresh apples mixing with the spices and earthy oats are the perfect combination for fall baking and dessert.

I use Granny Smith as mentioned and explained above, but you can use whichever apples you have on hand or prefer.
How long does it take for apples to cook in the oven vs an air fryer?
For this recipe, you will bake the apples for 20 minutes in the air fryer. If you were making baked apples in the oven it would take about 40 minutes to an hour for the cooking time.

Apple Corer: Using an apple corer makes hollowing out the apples easier and quicker.
Pastry Cutter: You can use a pastry cutter to easily incorporate the butter into the dry filling ingredients quickly and thoroughly.
Air Fryer: I’ve tried a few different brands of air fryers and this one is my absolute favorite!
Ingredients
- 4 granny smith apples
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons butter cold, cut into cubes
- Vanilla ice cream for topping
- Caramel sauce for topping
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, sugar, and cinnamon. Use your fingertips to pinch the cold butter into the oat mixture until you get pea-size crumbles. Work quickly so the butter doesn't get too warm.
- Using a paring knife or an apple core, remove most of the center core, leaving about 1/2-inch at the bottom. You should end up with a hole for the filling.
- Place the apples into an air fryer. Carefully add the oat mixture to the cavity in each apple until full.
- Turn the air fryer to 350 degrees F and cook for 20 minutes.
- Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, if desired.
