Ingredients
Salisbury Steaks: These patties are super simple! Ground beef, bread crumbs, and diced onions mixed with Worcestershire, olive oil, and a dash of salt and pepper. That’s it!
Onion Gravy: Beef broth and one onion are the basis for this stock. Just add a touch of Worcestershire, ketchup, and flour to thicken.
How to Make Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
STEP ONE: Mix the ground beef, bread crumbs, diced onion, Worcestershire, salt & pepper and form into oval patties, slightly larger than a 1/3 pound burger patty.
STEP TWO: Add olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium-high. When hot, add the patties and cook on both sides until the center is no longer pink. Remove patties and set aside.
STEP THREE: Reduce the skillet to medium heat. Add more olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook for about 10 minutes or until caramelized.
STEP FOUR: While the onions are cooking, mix the beef broth, Worcestershire, ketchup and flour in a large bowl and whisk until smooth. Remove the onions from the pan and add the beef broth mixture. Cook until the sauce starts to thicken.
STEP FOUR: Add the beef and onions back to the skillet. Simmer everything together for another 10 minutes. YUM!
Tips for Success
- Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor. The caramelized onions will absorb the pan drippings, adding to the rich flavor.
- This recipe is naturally dairy-free. It can also be gluten-free by replacing the panko bread crumbs and flour with gluten-free varieties.
- Add a touch of white wine to the sauce, form the ground beef mixture into meatballs, and serve over egg noodles – a different meal but every bit as delicious!
- If your family loves mushrooms, toss a few sliced mushrooms into the beef broth and let them simmer in the gravy during the final cooking stage.
Can I Freeze Salisbury Steak?
Absolutely, and don’t you love a recipe that can feed your family twice?? Once the cooked meal has cooled, divide it in half or save your leftovers by sealing them air-tight and freezing them for up to three weeks. When you’re ready to reheat, thaw them in the fridge overnight, then bake them at 350 for 30-40 minutes and serve!
What’s the Difference between Salisbury Steak and Country-Fried Steak?
Salisbury steaks are made with ground beef plus fillers like bread crumbs and onions, making them tender and flavorful. Country-fried steak (so yummy with white gravy!) is made from actual steak – cube steak, to be exact. But cube steak needs to be cooked quickly to be tender. If you tried to simmer it for longer, it would get tricky, so it’s not a good substitute for ground beef in this recipe.

Equipment
Ingredients
Ground Beef Steaks
- 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
- ½ cup Panko bread crumbs
- ⅓ cup yellow onion peeled and diced
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Onion Gravy
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Fresh parsley chopped
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, diced onions, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Thoroughly mix the ingredients together with your hands.
- Form beef mixture into six oval patties weighing approximately 6 ounces each.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, place the beef patties in the skillet and cook on both sides until the center is no longer pink. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your skillet.
- Transfer the burger patties to a plate and set aside.
- Using the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and make the onion gravy. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the skillet along with the sliced onions. Cook for approximately 10 minutes. Then increase the temperature to medium-high and continue to cook until they are caramelized. Transfer the onions to a bowl or the same plate as the burger patties.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Add the flour and whisk until no lumps remain.
- Pour the broth mixture into the skillet and cook until the sauce begins to thicken.
- Add beef patties and onions back to the skillet. Spoon the gravy over the beef, and let the patties cook in the gravy for another 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle some chopped parsley over the top for garnish. Serve warm.

This was delicious, it was moist and tender. It was better than what I normally do (use patties already made at the store). I also added mushrooms. I will be using this recipe again.

This recipe is insanely delicious. My girlfriend is an incredibly picky eater and the first time I made it, she ate nearly a pound of meat in one sitting, and then requested it about once a week for two months, in double batches so there’s enough for leftovers.

I made this recipe. I reduced the sodium by 1/2 and used low sodium Worcesters sauce. Added onion powder and garlic powder for more flavor

I added an egg to the meat mixture to help the patties bind together better, and about a tablespoon of sugar free ketchup for some extra flavor. This was a tasty recipe! I will definitely make this again. Thanks!
