Making your own BBQ Dry Rub is so simple and cost-effective. This flavorful rub will take your barbecue dinners to a whole new level!
I have tried a lot of pre-mixed BBQ rubs in my time and honestly, they mostly just taste like salt to me. When I do find a rub that I really like it is usually too expensive and you just can’t afford to be stingy when it comes to the amount of rub you’re using when you grill!
This homemade mix is the best BBQ Dry Rub I have used. It tastes great on all your BBQ favorites. Serve your favorite barbecue with some grilled potatoes and you never even have to leave the backyard grill!

I love to have BBQ Dry Rub in my spice cabinet to use in the summer. It makes the best seasoning for chicken, pulled pork, burgers, or as a BBQ ribs dry rub.
It packs so much flavor compared to generic store-bought versions. I even use it to lightly season my french fries!
You can even add chili powder or cayenne pepper if you want to add some spice to the rub. The possibilities are endless!
BBQ DRY RUB MIX INGREDIENTS
This barbecue rub goes great on pork, chicken, burgers, and especially pork ribs! The best part is you probably already have all of these ingredients in your cupboard right now!
- Smoked Paprika
- Brown Sugar
- Salt
- Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Dry Mustard
For added spice, add Cayenne Pepper or Chili Powder to taste!
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BBQ DRY RUB
- Combine all of the dry ingredients into a bowl.
- Stir the ingredients until they are fully mixed together.
- Transfer the rub to a mason jar or another airtight storage container.
HOW LONG BEFORE COOKING DO YOU APPLY DRY RUB?
For most meats like chicken, pork, steak, and burgers, my bare minimum dry rub window is 15 minutes in advance. This rub has a lot of flavor so you can definitely get away with a more hurried approach. I do typically try to let this rub rest on the meat for up to 2 hours if I have the time though.
For ribs, I suggest you apply the rub at least 30 minutes prior to cooking, though you will not regret applying it earlier and giving it time to absorb into the meat. If you have the time, I suggest prepping the ribs the night before and letting them sit in the refrigerator overnight for some extra flavor infusion.
DO YOU PUT BBQ SAUCE ON DRY RUB RIBS?
In my opinion, grilled ribs are not complete unless they’ve been brushed with a gooey layer of BBQ sauce. If you don’t need to use a moist towel to wipe your hands after your meal, did you even eat ribs?
With ribs, you can apply the rub in advance and cook them on the grill until they are almost finished. Then, in the last 5 minutes or so on the grill, brush the ribs with BBQ sauce for the perfect sticky coating.
