Hi everyone, I’m so excited to be joining the Real Housemoms team. I’m Kelley from Miss Information and once a month I will be sharing with you organizing and cleaning tips. Today, in honor of Audrey’s love for cooking, I am going to teach you how to clean wood cutting boards and utensils. Then I will show you how to condition them so that they last for years.
I do this about every three or four months. In-between washing by hand is fine but it drys out the wood. Make sure to see my list of 10 things you should wash by hand which includes wood cutting boards and utensils. This is a two step process the first is to clean your cutting boards, wooden or bamboo spatulas and wooden spoons. This will remove any disinfect and deodorize the wood. Get out a 9×13 pan and fill it with boiling water. Add 6 drops of DoTerra Lemon Oil or the juice of one lemon.
Put your wooden utensils down into the pan for 10 minutes and let them soak.
Take the utensils out of the pan and place them on a cookie sheet in the sun to dry. Pour the left over water over your cutting board and let it dry in the sun as well.
Once they are dry, the second step is to condition them. This will add back the moisture that is lost from cooking and washing in regular soapy water. I use Parker & Bailey Wooden Ware for this. It is a food safe conditioner.
Put a little on a clean cloth.
Wipe on your cutting board and wooden utensils. Buff lightly when dry.
Here is the cutting board before dry and scratched.
Here it is after with my wooden and bamboo spatulas. The scratches are gone and the wood is back to it’s conditioned beautiful color. Taking care of your favorite kitchen tools will make them last for years.
I hoped you enjoyed leaning how to clean wood cutting boards and utensils. If you would like to see more of my cleaning tips you can check out get more by clicking here.

Great tips that you have sharing us!! You can just use walnut oil alone or add a few drops of orange/lemon/any citrus essential oil for clean wooden kitchen tools. Thank you..

Thank you!

Are there any other oils that would work for this? My extremely coconut allergic daughter could die from this suggestion but I haven’t had great success with sunflower oil and feel like olive oil would go rancid. Any suggestions for another alternative so I can kick the mineral oil out?
Aubrey Cota says
Try walnut oil or avocado oil.

The tip shared above for cleaning the wooden board is very good and very effective. I followed the same procedure and it really worked for me.

Awesome!

Hi Aubrey. The cleaning technique is spot on 🙂 I happen to work with bees wax constantly and find that it also is helpful in treating wood. However, there is always the allergy.

Some great tips. I would never have thought of lemon juice – or wood conditioner for that matter.
