How to Have More Summer Fun
Whipping up cold, delicious treats are something that I love doing in the summer. Ok, tiny fib right there because I do it in the winter too but it’s more special in the summer! While I usually gravitate towards fruity sweets when it’s hot, I do crave cold, thick, chocolaty Frosty’s from time to time and my kids crave them ALL the time. I love the rich, chocolate flavor of these homemade Frosty’s and how much this copycat recipe actually makes- I can keep this in the freezer for a while for us to treat ourselves whenever we want and basically have the best summer treats ever.

Ingredients
Chocolate: You’ll need chocolate milk and Nesquik chocolate powder for a wonderfully chocolaty Frosty.
Frozen Items: A tub of your favorite whipped topping, that has been thawed, is the perfect ingredient to give this Frosty a nicely whipped texture. You can even use homemade Cool Whip if you prefer.
Extra Items: You will also need sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract.
How to Make Copycat Wendy’s Frosty
STEP ONE: To a blender, add half of each ingredient. (This recipe makes a lot so you will need to divide the ingredients in half and make the Frosty’s in two batches.) Cover and blend until everything is well mixed.
STEP TWO: Pour the mix into a 9×13 baking dish and place it in a freezer for 30 minutes. Grab the remaining ingredients, blend them up, pour the mixture into a second 9×13 dish, and pop it into the freezer as well.
STEP THREE: Scrape the Frosty mix every 30 minutes to break up ice crystals until the mix reaches the consistency you like. A more solid Copycat Frosty typically takes about 6 hours and a slushy like Frosty will be ready in about 4 hours.
Tips for Success
- This recipe makes a lot so you can cut the ingredients in half or double them to make as much or as little as you like. No matter how much you make it will taste amazing!
- Using a baking dish for each batch will help the mix freeze faster so that you can enjoy a Copycat Frosty sooner. You can use a large bowl for both batches if that is all you have but it will take a while to freeze.
- If you don’t want to use whipped topping, freshly made whipped cream will work too. Using a hand mixer, beat ½ cup heavy whipping cream + 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar in a large bowl until stiff peaks form. Instead of adding the whipped cream to the blender, blend the chocolate milk, Nesquik, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla together. Pour the chocolate mix into a large bowl and fold in the whipped cream, then pour the mix into baking dishes to freeze.
- This recipe can also be made in an ice cream maker. Simply prepare the mix as written and then add it to your ice cream maker. Follow the instructions on your model for settings and time.
Is a Wendy’s Frosty a milkshake or ice cream?
Wendy’s Frostys are actually a perfect mix of both textures! A Frosty is thicker than a milkshake but not quite ice cream, which makes it a unique and much loved sweet treat. You usually need a spoon to eat a Frosty but some people can get away with slurping with a straw.
Can I make this low fat?
You can substitute low-fat chocolate milk and lightly whipped topping in this recipe. Both are good swaps and you’ll enjoy the same Frosty goodness.

Equipment
Ingredients
- ½ gallon chocolate milk
- 6 tablespoons Nesquik powder
- 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
- 8 ounces Cool Whip thawed (1 tub)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Place half of the chocolate milk, half of the Nesquik powder, half of the sweetened condensed milk, half of the whipped topping, and half of the vanilla in a blender. (see note) Cover and blend until well mixed and combined.
- Pour into a 9-inch x 13-inch baking dish. Place into the freezer.
- Repeat with the remaining ingredients and pour into a second 9×13 baking dish.
- Every 30 minutes, scrape and mix the frosty to break up the ice crystals. Focus on the outer edges, they freeze first. Keep doing this until it is frozen to your liking. I like my frosty more solid which takes about 6 hours in the freezer. If you like your frosty on the slushy side, it should be ready aaround 4 hours.
Notes
- You have to blend this in two batches because all of the ingredients will not fit in a standard blender at one time. If you don’t have a blender, you can use a food processor or an immersion blender instead.
- You can put the whole mix into a large bowl if you don’t want to add it to two separate 9×13 containers. This recipe does make a lot so it takes a while to freeze, this is why I suggest two containers to make the process as fast as possible.
- The frosty mix does freeze nicely, but since it is more of an icy consistency it will start to melt faster than ice cream. If left in the freezer overnight, it will freeze almost solid, but it is still relatively easy to scoop some out and enjoy it.
- If you don’t want to use whipped topping, freshly whipped cream will work as well. Whip ½ cup heavy whipping cream plus 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar to stiff peaks. Instead of adding the whipped cream to the blender, blend the chocolate milk, Nesquik, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla together. Then pour the chocolate mixture into a large bowl and fold in the fresh whipped cream before freezing.
