Skip the Aerosol Chemical Sprays. Next time you are deodorizing the bathroom, think of lavender in a spray bottle. Lavender oil has antibacterial, antibiotic, antiviral, and antiseptic properties. Make this easy DIY All Purpose Cleaning Spray to clean everywhere in your house.
The lavender takes the acrid smell out of the vinegar, so it’s a lot more pleasant to use for cleaning. I usually make a few bottles at a time so I can keep one in each bathroom and one in the kitchen. Lavender oil is also calming and relaxing and we could all use a bit of that when we are trying to clean the house right? You can see how great it worked on my scratched up stainless steel sink after I loaded the dishwasher.
Why use Lavender Oil instead of another oil? The word lavender comes from lavare, meaning “to wash.” Because of its disinfectant properties, it has long been used in commercial cleaning products. Most good All Purpose sprays cost $3.00 or more. The supplies for this recipe will make your DIY all purpose spray cost lest than $.50 per bottle.
Here is all you need to make your own all purpose spray:
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup Borax
Heat the vinegar on your stove top or for 3 minutes in the microwave until almost boiling.
Pour in the Borax and stir until dissolved
Let cool and add lavender oil.
Put in a spray bottle and clean away.
If you are worried about Borax, let me explain why Borax is completely safe for cleaning. Borax is a naturally occurring substance produced by the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes. Nothing is added. No phosphates, peroxide, chlorine, or other additive chemicals. The natural boron and salt in Borax make a natural disinfectant to get rid of smells.

Indeed, that is a clean sink. I have a sink that looks just like yours. With those scratches that remain though, do you have a good way to remove them?
