A few years ago, Hubs and I decided to keep it classy for Halloween and do the Housewife & Milkman thing. It was pretty stinkin’ easy, too. If you’re looking for a costume idea that not a ton of other people will be wearing, or if you’re a grown woman who enjoys celebrating fun holidays while fully clothed rather than dressed like a half naked floozy, then this is a great option.
The dress in this pic was actually made by my mom from this vintage Butterick pattern, but any full skirt/dress or housewife-y outfit will work. I just happened to have been dying for a navy polka dot dress when this fabric was on sale. The main staples of this costume are the apron, the gloves, pearls and red lipstick. Oh, and a little man candy.
You’ll need:
1. Rubber gloves; 2. Pearls; 3. Polka dot apron; 4. White Pants & Shirt; 5. Black bow tie; 6. Milk Man name tag
You can find the gloves, pearls, lipstick, belt and bow tie all at Wal-mart for fairly cheap. I think we also got the pants and the shirt at Wal-mart. Nothing like one-stop shopping. For the milk man name tag, just find an art deco font (the on pictured is called Calamity Jane) and print it on some adhesive paper and slap it on your man’s shirt. For the apron, you can swing by a fabric store and grab some red and white polka dot fabric for a couple bucks along with some red ribbon and lace. Cut the fabric into a U-shape, hot glue the lace around the edge and tie the whole thing around your waist with the ribbon. You could also scope out the apron section at Wally World and get a blank apron to add some white painted polka dots to.
Make sure you glob on the red lipstick and give your man a few collar smooches to make it a little more scandalous while still keepin’ it classy.
Boom! So easy!
Happy Halloween, kiddos!
