Lately I’ve had a fascination with power tools – perhaps because I “helped” my husband build our deck for the better part of the summer. We’ve collected an array of old pallets lately for use on various projects, so I recently decided to use one for a fun home decor project that is super easy but packs a design punch! I can’t wait to show you how to make your own DIY Pallet & Book Page Art!
To make your own version of this art, you’ll need to round up either some old wood or a pallet. Check with landscape and builder supply companies – they tend to have extra lying around.
I chose this pallet from our stash. I love the colors and wear – I thought it added character to the wood.
I grabbed our circular saw and cut off four pieces of wood from the pallet. {Don’t mind the crazy weekend hair and sweats. I was workin’!} I didn’t really measure any of these – just cut four pieces to make the frame.
Next, I laid them out in a square on my garage floor to see how they would fit together. I wasn’t going for perfect and exact 90° angles because I wanted it to have some imperfections and charm, but I did need to do a little trimming.
Once the arrangement and trimming was done, I grabbed some 2 in x 1/2 in mending braces. *Sidenote: Because this particular pallet wood was thin, I had to swap out the screws for 1/4 inch. Just be sure you don’t use screws bigger than your wood, so they don’t poke through the front of your frame.
To attach the mending braces, simply connect the ends of two pieces and screw the brace into place – one screw on each piece of wood. Do this for all four corners.
Now to make the decoration!
For the center of my frame, I chose a piece of white foam board, which I cut to size.
Again, it didn’t have to be exact. I cut it just big enough to lay on the back of my frame without falling out of the front.
Then, I cut a piece of pretty scrapbook paper to fit on top of the foam board. I used scrapbook glue to attach the paper to the foam, then I used E6000 glue to attach the paper-covered foam to the back side of the frame.
To create the book page art, I simply tore pages from an old novel and twisted them into a cone shape, then trimmed the ends. I arranged them into a flower-like pattern then used a stapler to secure them all together. A little glue attached the book page flower to the paper in the frame.
Using my scallop circle punch, I simply punched one circle to cover the staples in the center of my flower, and voila!
You are left with a perfectly imperfect Pallet & Book Page Art piece!
The variations are limitless for this piece of art! You could use the pallet frame to dress up printed Instagram photos, hold recipes or notes, and tons more! Enjoy!
