Freshen up your favorite decorative storage with a DIY JUTE BASKET UPDATE!
I have this cute jute basket in my living room that holds my spare pillows. I got it from World Market and really like it, but like the rest of my room, I’m trying desperately to add some color and character! Rather than search for a new basket, I decided to take matters into my own hands with this easy Jute Basket Update idea! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised on how easy it is to update decor like this in very little time and for a fraction of the money it would cost to buy new!!
What you Need:
- FolkArt Ultra Dye Paint
- Paintbrush
- Jute basket
- Decorative yarn or twine
- Hot glue gun and glue
How to:
First, you start with your basket and decide on how you want to do your design. My basket had a think rim around it, so I decided to do a navy blue rim around the top and then do an ombre teal up the sides of the basket.
Start by pouring a small amount of the Ultra Dye into a bowl, getting a little on your brush, and gently paint onto the basket. I dab it to get it into the cracks. The Ultra Dye is nice because the grains of the basket will still show through, but the basket will just be dyed a nice color of your choice. It should be noted that Ultra Dye is not waterproof, so it shouldn’t be used on anything that will get wet.
After I painted the rim of the basket and let it dry, I then started the ombre effect on the bottom. I painted the teal on very heavily along the bottom and then worked my way up without reloading the paintbrush. You can do the paint as heavily or lightly as you like–even alternate colors depending on your color palette.
After I painted my basket, the last thing I decided to do was use this cute pom-pom white yarn I had on hand to make a garland around the basket. I hot glued the yarn around the basket and draped it down the side to give it a fun, whimsical look–and add lots of character!!
After I let all the paint dry, I put it back in my house, next to my credenza, with a pretty spare pillow filling it up…and I just love how it turned out!
