Last weekend while my sister in law and her fiance were in town we were super lucky to get a babysitter so we could go out and get some dinner. We wanted to find a place that was different and representative of Portland, not just your run of the mill restaurant or bar. After some research online we went to the Kennedy School McMenamins. It’s an old school that was turned into a hotel with a restaurant and several bars. It’s so neat. It still looks like a school inside. There was a wedding happening the night we were there in the gym. The artwork is still on the walls and the detention room has been changed into a cigar room! It was so much fun. Because the wait was long for the restaurant we went into the Boiler Room Bar and got a table for dinner. It was so neat, we were in what used to be the boiler room and you had the feeling that it was a small little pub. The food was fantastic and I tried out a new drink that didn’t disappoint. It’s called the Clover Club Cocktail and it was from the pre-prohibition era. I love history and in this case I was able to taste history!
When I got home I did a little research and learned that it was made in the Clover Club, which was a gentlemen’s club in the 1910’s. It is made with gin, grenadine, and fresh lemon juice. It used to be made with an egg white. It was shaken so that a foam would form at the top. I’m not a huge fan of drinking raw egg whites in my cocktails and the version I tried at the bar didn’t have any either so I left them out. I don’t think I’m missing anything. I have to admit that until just a few months ago I wouldn’t even come near gin. I’ve just never been a fan but lately I’ve come around and been enjoying the different options and drinks that I can make now.
This drink is so beautiful and the perfect color for the holidays! Give it a try. 🙂

The Kennedy School is one of the creepiest places I’ve ever been!
