Chocolate and peppermint go together like peanut butter and jelly. It’s the perfect holiday flavor combination. Pair this combo with the saltiness of pretzels and you have an incredible treat.
These Chocolate Peppermint Pretzels are a cinch to make. You can even get the kids involved in the process, too.
The first step in the process is to crush the peppermints. You can use the round mints or candy canes – either works fine. Simply unwrap them. Place them in a zipper bag and then use a rolling pin or meat mallet to crush them into tiny bits. My son loves to help this step.
The next step is to melt the chocolate. I like to melt mine using a double boiler. This keeps the chocolate at a constant temperature so it doesn’t harden on you. However, if you have littles that are helping you, you may want to use the microwave method so that you don’t have to work around a hot stove.
Once all of the components are ready, I begin assembling the pretzels. I find the easiest way to do this is to set up an assembly line, first dipping the pretzels in the chocolate and rolling them to coat them all the way around. I place the chocolate covered pretzels on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
Then, I sprinkle the mint pieces on the pretzels before the chocolate hardens. This is a great job for smaller children.
I prefer to only cover half of the pretzel rod with the chocolate but you can easily coat the entire thing if you wish. You can also use other pretzel shapes – this is a very flexible recipe.
I like to wrap a few of these pretzels is clear cellophane bags and include them in gift baskets. They go perfectly in coffee themed gift baskets or cocoa themed baskets. They’re also fun to add to cookie platters.
