15 Baking Soda Uses to Clean Your Home

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate which is a salt composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. Many of us know it best by the orange box with the logo of an arm holding a hammer on the front. Baking soda has tons of uses but here are 15 of my favorite baking soda cleaning uses for our home.

1. Place a box or their fridge deodorizer in your refrigerator and freezer to get rid of or keep at bay unpleasant odors.
2. Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of your trashcan and the bag to keep trash odor down.
3. Clean and deodorize your dishwasher by sprinkling some in the bottom or putting it in your detergent overflow compartment before doing a wash cycle.
4. If your garbage disposal starts to give off, lingering offensive odors pour baking soda down into your disposal start running your faucet with hot water, and turn on the disposal for a few seconds. If you need to sharpen, your blades throw in a few ice cubes as well. The baking soda will neutralize both acid and basic odors for a fresh drain.
5. Clean silver by mixing a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Rub the paste onto each item, and then rinse with warm water and dry immediately with a soft lint-free cloth.
6. Remove scuff marks or grease spills from the tile and vinyl flooring by sprinkling them with baking soda and wipe with a warm, damp cloth. If your scuff mark is a little tough, you can use a soft toothbrush to scrub it gently.
7. Use baking soda to clean dirt and residue off fresh fruit and vegetables. Just sprinkle a little on a vegetable brush or a clean damp sponge, scrub and rinse.
8. Get rid of your kids’ smelly sneaker odor by shaking baking soda into them. It absorbs odor-causing moisture while neutralizing existing odors. Tap out excess baking soda before wearing your sneakers again.
9. Clean hairbrushes and combs to remove natural oil build-up and hair product residue by soaking combs and brushes in a solution of 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a small basin of warm water. Rinse and allow to dry.

11. Clear up small clogs or avoid clogged drains altogether by pouring 1/4 cup baking soda into your drain and adding 1/2 a cup of vinegar. Watch it bubble then flush with hot water.
12. Get rid of soap scum on showers, tubs, and glass doors by making a paste of baking soda and water and using a sponge or brush to scrub it away.
13. Add 1/2 cup baking soda to your usual amount of liquid laundry detergent to give you “whiter whites” and brighter colors.
14. If your child accidentally wets the bed and it hits the mattress then take a towel and press into the mattress to get rid of as much moisture as possible. Sprinkle with baking soda and leave it to absorb the urine, let it dry, and vacuum off. The baking soda will absorb the urine and help with the odor.
15. Use baking soda to remove light-duty oil and grease spills on your garage floor or in your driveway. Sprinkle baking soda on the spot and scrub with a wet brush.
