Ingredients

Chicken: A rotisserie chicken or a freezer bag of your leftover cooked chicken works perfectly! Two cups, diced or shredded, for this BBQ Chicken Dip.

Cheese: LOTS! A block of cream cheese plus a cup of mozzarella cheese and a half cup of cheddar cheese will give this dip its rich, creamy goodness.

Sauce: A 1/4 cup of BBQ sauce (your choice!) makes this dip sweet and tangy, and a 1/4 cup of mayo keeps the cheeses creamy.

Seasoning: A cup of chopped red onion, a half cup of chopped cilantro, plus a little salt and garlic powder. Add the zing to this dip! Hold back just enough onion and cilantro to garnish the top.

How to Make BBQ Chicken Dip

STEP ONE: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Mix the softened cream cheese, mayo, and BBQ sauce in a large bowl.

STEP THREE: Spread the dip out in the bottom of a 2-quart casserole dish. Then sprinkle the cheddar cheese on top of the dip. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.

Tips for Success

  • Serve this BBQ chicken dip with potato chips, tortilla chips, flatbread pieces, OR carrot & celery sticks like you would with Buffalo chicken wings!
  • Precooked chicken like a rotisserie chicken or a frozen diced or shredded chicken package makes this appetizer SO EASY.
  • BBQ chicken dip can be mixed, baked, and cooked in a large cast iron skillet. Makes for an excellent presentation on the buffet.
  • To “up” the spice, garnish with sliced jalapenos or pepperoncini peppers. YUM!

What Kind of Barbecue Sauce is Best with Chicken?

The best BBQ Sauce is all a matter of taste! There are SO MANY flavor options out there. It’s crazy! I like a sweet sauce with this BBQ Chicken Dip recipe, but smoky or spicy styles are also delicious! (I prefer brands that don’t use high-fructose corn syrup.) Vinegar- and mustard-based BBQ sauces are fantastic with grilled chicken, but I don’t recommend them for BBQ chicken dip or barbecue chicken pizza.

Can You Make BBQ Chicken Dip Ahead of Time?

This barbecue chicken pizza dip can easily be made a day or two in advance! Assemble the dip in your baking dish or cast iron skillet, give it an air-tight cover, and refrigerate. When it’s time, remove it from the fridge, uncover it, and follow the baking instructions.

I usually use a rotisserie chicken from the store to make this dip. You could also cook off a couple of chicken breasts ahead of time and use that instead.
