Orange Bird Feeders

Citrus is in-season during the winter months, making things like oranges a common fruit of choice at our house this time of year. Thanks to the three orange trees in our backyard, we have no shortage! After doing some juicing, I realized that the kids and I could do a fun project with the leftover rinds — orange bird feeders!

The birds already go crazy for the oranges in our yard. So, why not create a bird feeder out of them? This project is SO easy and a fun way to get ready for spring! The kids loved helping make these! All you need are a few supplies:

• orange(s)
• birdseed
• twine/jute
• knife

I used oranges that I had already cut for juicing. So, they were like small open vessels perfect for holding birdseed. In order to hang them, you need some holes in the orange halves to lace the twine through. You can try with just two, but we found that four holes were really so much better for stability. Use a knife or citrus sectioning tool to puncture small holes opposite each other on the orange half.

Lace the twine through the holes so that the twine goes through the empty inside of the orange to create a hanger. Tie the feeder to a tree (or location of your choice), then fill with seed! This was so quick to do and the kids had a great time doing it!
