Party season is upon us so it’s super handy to have an arsenal of quick party food that you can whip up no matter how busy you are.
And while I always prefer cooking from scratch when I can. Some of my favorite easy dips are olive tapenade and hot onion dip made entirely from scratch, you’re missing out – there are many times when I simply don’t have time to make it from scratch.
And this French Onion Dip made with French Onion Soup Mix has saved me many times. MANY times!
Even though it’s made using a French Onion Soup Mix, my twisted logic tells me that because I didn’t buy it in a tub from the store, it is semi home-made. 🙂
And I can absolutely promise you, it is BETTER than store bought because it’s creamier. So many French Onion Dips sold at stores are rock hard when cold so the chips break when you try to scoop up dip. This French Onion Dip is soft even straight from the fridge – no more broken chips! 😉
There are versions of this made with just sour cream and French Onion Soup Mix. But I really feel that the addition of mayonnaise makes a huge difference – adds richness and more layers of flavor.
Even though using standard rather than salt reduced French Onion Soup Mix is fine, the reason I prefer salt reduced is because I find that some chips are so salty anyway that you don’t need a super salty dip. But really, it’s up to you! If serving with salt reduced or lightly salted chips or crackers, then standard rather than salt reduced soup mix is just fine.
Give this a try! I promise you will LOVE it. Seriously tastes just like store bought!

Ingredients
- 400 g / 14 oz sour cream full fat is better
- ½ cup mayonnaise Hellmann’s or a whole egg mayo is best
- 40 g / 1.4 oz French Onion Soup Mix preferably salt reduced
Instructions
- Mix ingredients together in a bowl.
- Rest for 5 minutes or until onion bits in the soup mix become softened.
- Serve with your favorite chips!

Full fat? Is that 18% or 14%.
My mom made this dip for veggies at all the family functions. Others tasted and loved it.

Wow this was extremely easy and tasty! I had a mad hankering for some chip dip and didn’t want to run to the store again, so happy I found this recipe! I’ll definitely use the reduced sodium french onion soup mix next time, as this was a bit salty but I just added another spoonful of sour cream and it was great. Love the addition of mayonnaise, I agree it adds something extra! Such a great dip recipe to have on hand as I always have these ingredients in my pantry!
