Spritz cookies, are made of flour, sugar, eggs, and butter and are a German Christmas cookie. You can also make cream cheese spritz cookies. The word “spritz” comes from the German word “Spritzen,” which means “to squirt,” which is exactly what you do with the cookie press when making these adorable little cookies.
How to Make Spritz Cookies
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl cream butter, powdered sugar, and salt. Add in eggs and vanilla, (or you can use almond or eggnog extract (optional). Adding a little at a time beat in flour until all ingredients are mixed together.
- Using a cookie press fill the tube with dough and attach the end with your favorite cookie disc. Squeeze the cookie press handle a few times to get the dough to begin to squirt out the end. Then using a rimmed baking sheet begin to press the cookies onto the sheet a few inches apart.
- Place in oven and cook for 7 minutes, don’t let them brown. Remove cookies and place on a wire baking rack to cool. *You don’t want your spritz cookies to brown, so make sure to watch the first batch so ensure the proper amount of time for your oven, anywhere between 6-8 minutes. Remove them from the cookie sheet right away and allow to cool on a wire rack.
- In a small bowl mix together powdered sugar and water to make the glaze. Once cookies are cooled brush each cookie with glaze and top with your favorite candy confetti, sprinkles, or colored sugar. Making the glaze is optional. If you don’t want to make the glaze, simply add your toppings to the cookies and then bake them.
Refrigeration and freezing instructions:
Fridge: Spritz cookie dough will last up to 4 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container. When you are ready to make the cookies, allow the dough to sit at room temperature to soften enough it can squeeze through the cookie press.
Freezer: Make sure they are fully baked and cooled. Using an airtight container line it with a piece of parchment paper. Layer the spritz cookies in a single layer on top of paper then lay an additional piece of parchment paper over the top and repeat layering until the container is full.
Spritz cookies are so fun to make and even more delicious to eat.

Hi, what kind of cookie press do you use? I see it’s metal. It seems that most of them are plastic & I would love to get one like the one you showed.
Thanks, Maggie

The one that is linked in the tools used section is quite honestly a favorite of ours, it’s very easy to clean and not cheap in the way that it will break after one use. However, if you prefer the metal version here is another favorite especially because it has so many amazing accessories… https://amzn.to/2BCuYXU
