Why the Margarita is a Worldwide Favorite

Jimmy Buffet immortalized this “frozen concoction” in song because the margarita has it all – sweet, salty, and sour, making it delightfully refreshing and smooth. The tangy lime, sweet agave nectar, and flavored liqueur sipped through a salted rim combine on your tongue to create the perfect balance of flavors!

Not only are margaritas spectacular and easy to make, but they’re also an incredibly versatile cocktail! They feature dozens of flavors, from citrus orange to fruity strawberry, peach, or watermelon, from spicy jalapeno lime to super rich chocolate cream. They’re perfect for Spring Break vacation, Cinco de Mayo, National Margarity Day, and pool parties! Serve them shaken, stirred, or frozen in glasses rimmed with salt or sugar or…well, your options are endless!

Tequila: For this spectacular tropical margarita, we’re using coconut tequila!

Water: Not just any water will do—this recipe needs pineapple-flavored coconut water. Trust me—it’s perfect for this drink!

Sweetness: Since tequila is made from agave, sweetening this cocktail with agave nectar brings out the flavor of the tequila.

Citrus: Fresh lime juice (from the fruit, not a bottle!) is essential for a great margarita!

Garnish: You’ll need salt to rim the glasses as the finishing touch!

How to Make a Coconut Margarita

STEP ONE: Run a slice of lime around the edge of each glass to moisten, then dip the rim in a bowl of salt. If you like ice, carefully fill the glass with ice and set it aside for now. Then, fill a cocktail shaker with ice and pour in the tequila.

Tips for Success

  • The key to this margarita variety is the flavored tequila and flavored coconut water—they make this drink easy and delicious!
  • Salted rims are classic, but what about rimming the glasses with a little toasted coconut? Yum!
  • Don’t be tempted to substitute lime juice for fresh lime. Bottled juice is often loaded with artificial ingredients that affect the flavor. Please keep it simple and stick to the real thing!

What’s in a Margarita?

The word “margarita” actually means “daisy”? But a margarita is an iconic drink containing about 50% tequila, 30% flavored liqueur (orange is the classic), and 20% fresh lime juice. These mixed cocktails can be shaken, stirred, or frozen and served in a salted-rim glass. Margarita recipes are as abundant as they come, with numerous fruity, savory, sweet and spicy options served by the glass or a pitcher full! Regardless of the flavor, they are always a crowd favorite!

How Do I Make Salted-Rim Glasses?

Salting the rim of your cocktail glasses for margaritas and other drinks is much easier than you might imagine! The best way is to pour a generous amount of salt (or sugar) about ¼” thick into a small bowl. Next, slice a lime into quarters. Run a slice around the top edge of a glass, then turn the glass over and press it down into the salt. Set upright for a few minutes to allow the lime juice to dry before filling and serving.

Instructions

  • Run a slice of lime around the rim of a margarita or rocks glass. Dip the rim into margarita salt to coat. Carefully fill with ice, if desired, and set aside.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the tequila, coconut water, agave syrup, and lime juice. Cover and shake vigorously.
  • Strain the margarita into the prepared glass. Garnish with a lime slice and a pineapple chunk on the rim. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use actual coconut water for this margarita. You don’t want carbonated water with coconut/pineapple flavoring. (It’ll make the cocktail shaker fly off when you shake everything together.) If needed, you can substitute pineapple-flavored tequila if you can’t find coconut water with pineapple.

I LOVE coconut so I tried this one last night and it was really good. I do think next time I will skip the agave because it stayed in the bottom of the shaker instead of mixing in the drink. Also didn’t really have any pineapple taste so i may add a splash of pinapple juice to it.

  3. The Mexican restaurant you were probably referring to was El Torito. I go there frequently and enjoy the coconut pineapple margarita. I asked how they made it, they order the mix through Sysco. Hope this helps.

  4. Malibu had a product- MALIBU RED. TRY that in your next Pineapple Coconut Margarita….DELISH!
