About a year and a half ago my husband and I watched Fat Sick and Nearly Dead, a documentary on Netflix. It’s about a couple of men that overcome health issues by juicing. They only take in raw fruit and vegetable juices. Well, we decided it couldn’t hurt and so we got a juicer and started to cleanse. Taking in nothing but fruit and vegetable juices is not easy. You get plenty of calories, vitamins and so on but no protein or at least not at levels that are recommended for adults our size. I do think there are incredible benefits from juicing but with the activity level that I’m at I really need protein. I’m starting to train for a half marathon (no specific race as of yet) and I do an hour long boot camp three times a week. I also know that I don’t eat enough veggies, especially raw veggies. I don’t have anything against them I just get distracted or caught up and don’t consume enough.
So today after boot camp and my run I was feeling tired and thought that a juice sounded good but again I’m working to take in enough protein so why not make a smoothie with my juice and some non fat Greek yogurt. When you choose your Greek yogurt keep in mind that they are not all created equal. You can look at four different brands of non fat Greek yogurt and find four different calorie and protein totals. I have Fage right now and have found it to have one of the most protein. Look at the labels when you’re at the store and pick the one that works for you. I went green for several reasons. One, I’m Irish and we are about to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!!!! I love all the green treats and corned beef and green drinks and so on. I was thinking that they don’t all have to be “bad” for me right? The second reason is that green veggies have so much goodness in them why not? If you’ve spent anytime in the fitness or beauty categories of Pinterest you’ve seen what a super food Kale is. With this drink you are getting it raw and it tastes like sweet apple banana juice. You really can’t go wrong. I used one banana but you can use as much as you’d like. This makes enough for 2 large glasses. Try it out this week and let us know what you think, even if you do it the day after St. Patrick’s Day after a little too much green beer!
