Poppy Seed Dressing

Poppy Seed Dressing is so good on a salad with fresh spring or summer veggies! Making it from scratch couldn’t be easier and the taste is well worth it!!!

Poppy Seed Dressing | Real Housemoms

We eat a lot of salads in the summer. Now that we’re in Oregon and we have access to a really great farmer’s market, we try to eat all kinds of goodies. We also really like dressings. I’ll admit that I’ve bought my fair share of salad dressing but I really feel like I should just be making it. That way I know what’s in it, there are no preservatives or other un-yummies. It’s also a lot cheaper and quicker to just make up a batch of fresh dressing. I mean you pour it all into a jar and shake! How could that be any easier.

I like this dressing because it’s not too thick and not too runny. You could easily adjust by adding either water or more Greek yogurt, a little at a time, until you reach the desired consistency. The flavor it a little sweet but not too sweet. The onion and mustard powder help to keep a great balance. I like this over salads with fruit added in, like apples, grapes or strawberries. What are your favorite dressings to make?

  1. I know this was posted quite awhile ago but hopefully you will see this and be able to answer for me. Could I substitute sour cream for the yogurt?

    1. You could substitute sour cream, but you may need to add a little milk to thin out the dressing to your desired consistency since sour cream is generally thicker than the yogurt. Also, the flavor will not be spot on to the original recipe, but close. 🙂

    2. neuroticmom, sure you can:) I put a few tablespoons of heavy cream in mine instead of yogurt. I also add some garlic and onion powder, honey and lemon juice…all to taste. YUM! ♥

    1. It’s a sweetener. If you want to mix it up without the honey first and see if you want it in, I’d go that route. 🙂

  2. Anxious to try this! Have you ever used apple cider vinegar instead of white? Wondering if it would be a noticeable difference?

    1. I haven’t but I bet it’d be OK. I know my mom uses apple cider vinegar a lot. I think it would affect the color more than anything. 🙂

    1. You know I’m not too sure. I think we kept it in there for a week or two before we used it all.

  3. This will sound like a stupid question. 😉 Do you think the poppy seeds really add much yo this dressing? I think it sounds wonderful, but I cannot eat seeds. Thanks for all your great posts!

    1. I honestly don’t think they add to the flavor at all, it’s just for show. I think you’d be fine leaving them out. 🙂

  4. This looks like the perfect dressing for SO many dishes! Fruit, proteins, or just a big ‘ol salad. LOVE!
