Back when I just graduated college and had moved to Boise, ID (gosh, that seems like ages ago!) my boyfriend told me about this show on HBO that he thought I might like. It was about these four ladies living in New York City. He said, “I’ve only seen one episode, but I already know you will love it!” With his suggestion, I tuned into the show “Sex and The City,” and I was immediately hooked. It was a time when I had moved away from all my girlfriends, started my first job out of college and was having a tough time making new friends. In sort of a weird, desperate way Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha became my new BFF’s. Please tell me I’m not the only one!
The Cosmopolitan Cocktail Ingredients
The gorgeous pink drink in a martini glass garnished with lime was the preferred drink of the Sex and the City ladies and was something that I needed to learn how to make right away. Vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice and lime juice is all that is necessary to mix up this sophisticated Cosmo drink.
I eventually navigated my way into making some new friends in real life (PS – it is hard making friends as a grown-up more so than when you were a kid, am I right?). However, the ladies of New York City had me hook, line and sinker. I loved being a part of their lavish, albeit, utterly fictional lifestyle. Their sophisticated fashion, careers, and nightlife was something that 20-somethings dreams are made of. Consequently, this was also when I was introduced to their signature drink.
How to make a Cosmo
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Add the vodka (I like Tito’s), Cointreau, cranberry juice and lime juice into the shaker, then add a tight-fitting lid.
- Shake, and then pour into a martini glass.
- Garnish with an orange rind, cranberries/lime wedge or slice.
Eventually, HBO stopped production of Sex and the City after several seasons. They made a couple of movies, which in my opinion were a bit of a disappointment. Now that I’m in my forties, I look back at my twenties and cringe a little. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come, how much I’ve learned, the family that I now have, and the friends I’ve made. But that delicious, sophisticated Cosmo recipe has stayed with me as my signature drink. Cheers!
