Classic Tequila Sunrise (with Grand Marnier)

This Tequila Sunrise recipe takes just one minute, and gets an upgrade to the standard tequila, orange juice, and grenadine with Grand Marnier. It adds depth and a delicious cognac-based orange sweetness.

I love a good brunch cocktail, especially when I have family visiting. Instead of the standard mimosa, I serve up a Tequila Sunrise with a bit of an upgrade. I’ve made this drink many times over the years, and love the addition of the Grand Marnier. There is a bit of a cognac orange sweetness that it brings to the drink

What You’ll Need for a Perfect Sunrise

Orange Juice

To get the sunrise appearance, you want to keep your layers separate. To do this, make sure you use a pulp-free orange juice. If you don’t have pulp-free juice, just strain your juice before combining it with the rest of the ingredients.

Tequila

The look of a Tequila Sunrise is what makes it a “sunrise.” To get the best look, make sure you’re using a silver tequila. It doesn’t have to be high-end, as it’s going into a mixed drink, but make sure not to select the cheapest option, either. Think middle of the road.

Why Grand Marnier

Adding the Grand Marnier gives this drink a depth of flavor that really elevates it. Grand Marnier is a cognac-based orange liqueur, so it pairs just a little more with the standard Tequila Sunrise Cocktail. If you don’t have any on hand, don’t worry. You can definitely use another orange liquor or just skip it, but I recommend trying it next time you have it on hand.

Grenadine and Spoon

To make the beautiful reddish-pink layer, you’ll use the grenadine and a spoon, if you don’t have a handy pour spout. You’ll place a spoon just inside the top of your glass once the cocktail has been poured in. Then very slowly drizzle the grenadine onto it and let it slowly fall to the bottom of your glass.

Can I Serve it in a Pitcher?

If you’re hosting a brunch, you may want to make a larger batch. That way, you’re not stuck making drinks all morning. Simply mix up the orange juice, tequila, and Grand Marnier ahead of time in a pitcher. Then, when you’re ready to serve, pour the grenadine in each glass, individually.

How Can I Dress Up This Classic Tequila Sunrise Recipe?

This tequila cocktail is perfect with the addition of the Grand Marnier and a simple Maraschino cherry garnish. But if you want to jazz up your garnish, add an orange slice or lime slice to complement the bright citrus flavor and beautiful colors. Want to really kick it up a notch? Garnish with a few slices of fresh jalapeño before serving! That will add a bit of spice to our morning!
