DIY Stenciled Hot Pad Holder

Spring is my all time favorite time of year! Tulips … warmer weather … longer days … greener grass. It also means that Mother’s Day is just around the corner! Today I’m sharing a fun handmade gift idea … perfect for Mother’s Day (especially if your mom loves to cook and bake!) … A DIY Stenciled Hot Pad Holder!

It’s the perfect practical and pretty gift for Mom! You can customize this however you wish and match the colors to her kitchen! I also have a free printable tag to go with!

Now … you do need a sewing machine, and you do have to know how to sew straight lines to make a square, but other than that, this project is actually pretty basic!

SUPPLIES:

Here’s what you’ll need ….

  1. Canvas Fabric … I actually used an old drop cloth! You will only need two 9″ squares from this fabric.
  2. Insulated Batting (the brand I used was Insul-Bright from JoAnn). Basically, it’s just heat resistant batting. You’ll need enough for two 9″ squares.
  3. Regular Batting (enough for one 9″ square)
  4. Piping or double fold bias tape
  5. Two colors of craft paint
  6. Paint brush
  7. Letter Stencils
  8. Stenciling brush / pouncer
  9. Painter’s tape

PROCESS

And here’s how to create it (it actually is pretty easy despite the number of steps pictured below, I promise) …

  1. Cut your fabric, batting, and Insul-Bright into the pieces listed below:
    • Two 9″ squares out of canvas (drop cloth) material.
    • Two 9″ squares out of Insul-Bright
    • One 9″ square out of the regular batting.
  2. Grab ONE of your canvas squares and roughly tape off half using painters tape as shown.
  3. Using a foam brush, paint half the square using your craft paint (or fabric paint).
  4. Once the paint is dry (about 1.2 – 2 hours), stencil on your letters using another color of paint and a pouncer.
  5. Allow your letters to dry.
  6. Now, grab all of your squares.
  7. Using the unpainted canvas square, sew the piping around the edge. If you fabric has a right side, you’ll want to sew this around the edge of the right side. Make sure the piping is towards the inside and the trim is to the outside. Here’s a close up of how it should look:DIY Stenciled Hot Pad Holder. 8. Next, cut a small strip (~6″-8″) of the piping and create a loop for one corner. This loop will get sewn into the corner. Lay your painted square face UP … add your loop to one corner (look facing into the center as shown), then lay your unpainted and piped square on top face DOWN.
  9. Next, make a sandwich with all your squares as follows:  lay one insul-bright square down, then batting, then another insult-bright, then your canvases (that should already be facing each other).
  10. Pin that sandwich together.
  11. Sew around the edges, but leave a gap (~2″ on one side to allow you to flip your hot pad holder right side out).
  12. Trim any excess fabric on the corners, then flip the hot pad holder right side out.
  13. Iron the square and fold the extra fabric in at the gap. Sew a top stitch around the entire square, closing the gap. I also added several diagonal ‘quilting’ lines for some added interest and durability.
  14. Add your TAG and …

DONE!
