When you have five kids, you learn to cook for a crowd. Now that all but two of our kids are grown and out of the house, and with our youngest daughter either at work or out with friends, most nights it’s just me, my husband, and Jr. Cooking for three is a far cry from cooking for seven. I’ve had to learn to scale down my favorite family recipes, which hasn’t always been easy.
Thankfully, most recipes are so simple you can ‘play them by ear’, so to speak. Take my spaghetti sauce with meatballs, for example. Like my mom, I don’t measure, I just start dumping spices and other ingredients based on how many people I need to feed. This ham and Swiss pull apart bread is the same. Need to feed more people? Just use a bigger loaf of bread and add more ham and cheese. Easy.

In this case, you may want to make a bigger loaf simply for the fact that it’s so delicious. At least, that’s what I would do. I’m not big on sharing food 😉

Using a bread knife, slice your demi-baguette (I found mine at Costco) lengthwise, making cuts 1-inch apart. Be sure not to cut all the way through the bread. Turn the loaf 180 degrees and cut the bread again, slicing 1-inch apart, making sure not to cut all the way through the bread. This will leave you with several ‘squares’ of bread.

Spread the mayo mixture in between all the slits, and be generous! Next, shove the sliced ham and cheese in between. Don’t be afraid of over-stuffing, there’s no such thing. You want this baby really loaded with cheesy, hammy goodness.

Once it’s baked to a nice cheesy, crispy top, sprinkle on some sliced green onions.

Set it on a nice wood cutting/serving board and watch as everyone comes running. Or not. You could always keep it a secret and have at it, I won’t tell.
