Give the kids a special treat with their own High Tea for Two (or three or four)! Have some snacks and spend some uninterrupted time together!
Having tea time with my girls has been a regular occurrence since they were able to carry around their plastic Fisher-Price cups and saucers. They would”pour” me a cup of tea, and then we’d eat plastic cakes and cookies while sitting cross-legged on the floor.
Now, at 4 and 6 years old, the novelty still hasn’t worn off. To be honest, it hasn’t worn off for me, either.
Tea has now become more of an experience than a game for me and the girls. We set aside time for tea – and oftentimes, try to make it more of a “high tea” (lunch and pastries along with our Earl Grey).
The fancy tea set doesn’t have to cost much. Everything on this table was found at a thrift shop or a garage sale – save the cupcakes and the spoons. The most expensive purchase? The brass tiered tray – I spent $10 at a thrift shop.
Everything else was around a buck apiece.
Sometimes I bake, and sometimes I buy. But our high teas are not so much about what I’ve done in preparation.
For the girls, it’s about the undivided attention I’m giving them. It’s a time where we are all sitting around the table, making conversation. Not unlike when I have friends over for a cup of tea, this is a time where we chat. On purpose. For sometimes an hour.
It’s a time for the girls where everything is made to be special. They get to have their own tea – heavily “watered down” with milk and honey. If the kitchen sink is piled high with dishes, or if the vacuum is desperate to come out and clean the floor, it doesn’t matter.
Tea time is when all of the hustle-and-bustle stops.
Is there someone in your house who would love to have a regular high-tea? Or maybe it’s you?
Keep your eyes peeled at garage sales – many people sell their china collection for dirt cheap. If you happen to see day-old pastries on sale, or if you’ve baked up some beautiful cookies, consider taking the time to savor them in a tea party for two – or three or five!
It’s a great way to carve out a space for chatting with your kidlet. Plus, you get to eat cakes at the same time!
Food that is perfect for a high tea platter:
- Cucumber sandwiches or ham and cheese sandwiches, with the crusts cut off… or course
- Fresh fruit
- Scones and cream cheese
- Bagels and lox
- Cupcakes
- Pastries
- Cookies
Or let your child brainstorm their own favorite high-tea foods. They could help create your tiered tray of delicious nibbles!
