Summer is coming up and we’ve been looking for fun ideas to keep our kids busy and sneak some learning in at the same time. We each have 4 and 7-year-olds and want to keep them entertained, while also preparing them for the next grade. My daughter is starting kindergarten in the fall and Vaughn is right behind her and we can’t believe our “babies” are so big.
We came across some awesome free printables at nickjr.com that include coloring pages, games, and learning activities, organized by theme, age, and show. Their site also offers great ideas for recipes, birthday parties, and crafts, as well as videos and other resources for parents.
It’s great that our kids are the same ages so we can have lots of play dates. We got together today and our four year olds played some fun games from the nickjr. site. It was adorable to watch them play restaurant. They also had fun playing a matching memory game, writing their letters, and coloring pages from Dora and Wonder Pets. The Bubble Guppies Play Restaurant Pack kept them busy and playing for a long time. They had no idea they were working on math and money learning skills. They were precious in their chef gear as they came up with a menu and prices for each item, and were serving food in the kitchen. The kids paid money for their food, with play money that was included in the play pack, and even gave tips for good service! This activity was especially cute for us to watch since we blog about food and recipes and are always in the kitchen cooking something yummy!
Since our kids have been born, which (gasp was seven years ago), we have loved Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. and have watched a laundry list of their tv shows, including Dora, Go, Diego, Go!, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Wow Wow Wubbzy, Wonder Pets, The Backyardigans, Olivia, The Fresh Beat Band, Max & Ruby, iCarly, and Victorious! We love that there is such a great age range for their shows. My first memories are of The Backyardigans when Tyler was one. We took a road trip to Sacramento and since he just met the requirements to face forward in the car seat, we put a Backyardigans DVD in the car and he was so happy for a lot of the ride. The songs that played on the dvd still take me back to those days, and when my daughter watches those episodes, I distinctly remember that road trip.
Now Nick has even started producing television for moms at night, once the kids are asleep. They have talk shows, comedy shows, and even MFF: Mom Friends Forever about two mom vloggers and their family lives. Judi and Kate are friends and moms that had a website there they talk about real mom issues and the funny things that moms deal with while working and taking care of their families. Nick has done a wonderful job creating programming for the youngest member of the family to the real moms that help keep things rolling.
