The Best Way to Pack and Organize Christmas Ornaments

No one wants to lose treasured Christmas ornaments and over the years I’ve tried a few things so keep mine safe. Here is what I have found to be THE BEST WAY TO PACK AND ORGANIZE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS and decorations so they will stay safe and dust-free!

My parents started collecting Christmas ornaments for my sister and me when we were little. Every year we would receive a new ornament so that when we went out on our own we would have a fully decorated tree. It’s always fun to unpack them and remember special moments. We have continued this tradition with our children and they each have their own tree in their rooms.

We have at least four trees that we put up each year, our main tree, both kids trees, and a themed white house tree and keeping everything separated so we know where they go is key.

The White House tree you see above has every White House ornament ever made and a few other patriotic ornaments. I keep all of these together in one storage container along with the tree skirt, glittered pics, ribbon, and the extension cord for this tree.

That way when I’m ready to put it up I have it all right there. Anything with glitter like the pics you see above I put in a trash bag so it keeps the glitter contained. Whoever said glitter is the herpes of crafts is right! I also have some glittered starts which I put in gallon-sized zip-top bags.

I do recommend using clear storage containers, this way you can see what is in them at a glance without having to open every container. If you don’t want to buy new containers and have some already just grab a label machine or masking tape and make a label for the sides and ends.

You can buy a huge wreath box but there is really no need. My mom taught me this inexpensive storage technique for wreaths that works just as good and will cost you virtually nothing! First, take some of your leftover tissue paper and stuff it into the loops of your bows. This will keep them from getting smashed and you won’t need to replace them every year.

After I do that I simply place it in a kitchen-sized trash bag and hang it on a nail. If you have larger wreaths a green yard sized bag will work.

Now for ornaments, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you have collectible ornaments you always want to keep the original box they came in. I have several sets of Polonaise and Kurt Adler collectibles. They will lose value if you get rid of the box they came in and these wood boxes will keep them safe and sound. I put all of these boxes in a plastic storage container. We keep our ornaments in a basement closet and when our basement flooded they were thankfully all safe.

For all of your other ornaments, I recommend buying ornament boxes. These tall ones’ from Snapware, I use for my boy’s Christmas trees and have put their names on the top so we will know who each belongs to. You can buy 2 and put them together for vertical storage. They just snap right into each other.

For our large family tree, I use the big containers from Sterilite. You can purchase these at most big box hardware stores or online at Amazon.

They come with pre-made cardboard dividers you can customize to the size of your ornaments so big and small will fit.

I then use tissue paper or crinkle cuts shreds to protect glass or ceramic ornaments. I caution you to only use white or natural colored tissue so that the dye in colored tissue doesn’t accidentally transfer to your ornaments and damage them.
