I love the farmhouse look, but if you follow the major “farmhouse retailers” you know that those price tags can be steep. So recently when I couldn’t find an affordable fruit basket for our kitchen, I decided I could make my own! And I’m sharing this cute and easy project with you today.
What you’ll need:
- Rectangular wooden craft box or crate
- Gray acrylic paint
- Black acrylic paint (or dark gray)
- Paint brush
- Sandpaper
- Water
- Cricut, Silhouette or stencil
- Stencil paper or paper and tape
And the steps:
Dilute your gray acrylic paint with a ratio of 1:1 paint and water. Paint thin layers of the paint “stain” onto your wooden box, letting each layer dry completely in between. Then let the paint cure overnight.
Once the paint is dry, use sand paper to buff off some of the paint, until the wood looks gray and weathered – not painted. This helps you to achieve a weathered, farmhouse look.
Using this Cricut file or your own design from the Silhouette, create a stencil for your fruit basket. You could also find a standard letter stencil at your local craft store and put it together with the letters below.
Once the stencil is cut out, apply it to your wooden box in the center of the front and using dark gray or black acrylic paint, fill in the stencil.
Let the painted letters dry, and your new DIY Farmhouse Fruit Basket is DONE! And for a fraction of what you’d pay at salvage stores or online. Trust me, I’ve looked around.
What do you think? I’m so happy with how it turned out! And now my great search for an affordable Farmhouse Fruit Basket is over. I love when you can just make something that you’ve looked so long to find.
