Add the butter, sour cream, cream cheese, and dry ranch mix to a medium mixing bowl. Use a hand mixer to beat on medium speed until smooth.
Spread the ranch dip base out in an even layer on a large serving plate. Top the dip base first with the cheddar cheese, then the bacon crumbles, and finally the green onions.
Cover the plate with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 1 hour to let the flavors marry together.
When you're ready to eat, uncover the plate and serve with crackers or chips for dipping.

A 1-ounce packet of ranch seasoning has about 2 ⅔ tablespoons of mix.
